There Will Be Delays
April 27, 2010 | 6:15am
Like most families, the weekends are crazy busy. This weekend was especially busy, with our little town’s annual celebration. I walked around town with a smile on my face, conversing with each familiar face I ran into. I embrace small town USA. These folks know about life and hard work. With a busy Saturday, I knew I wouldn’t get any gardening done.
Finally Sunday, after a short run (13.1 miles), I was going to get some planting done. Despite the 40 mph wind (NOT an exaggeration), we got started. My girls and I set out the necessary tools: rake, hoe, shovel, gloves, fertilizer, garden hose and plants. After breaking -up the soil with the hoe and leveling it out with the rake; I assigned the girls each a task. One was to dig a hole, the other to drop the slow release fertilizer in the hole and then I would follow by dropping the flower (begonias) into the hole and plant it. Easy enough…not this time! The gusts of wind blew the soil right into our eyes. As you can see from the picture, the baby couldn’t keep her eyes open. Ugh! The tears began to stream down and the complaints got louder. Despite our best effort, the wind was too much and we called it a day! As gardeners, we accept the weather and work with it! Later this week, we will finish what we started and I will have another story to share with you.
Has the weather or a busy schedule delayed your garden plans this year? I know I’m not the only one, share a story with me.

It has!!! I had great plans to plant my onions and some more flowers on Saturday, but here in Iowa we had buckets of rain on Friday. So I took advantage of the wet soil and pulled buckets of weeds instead. The plants I bought, since ii is cool outside, I set them in the sun with a clear plastic tub over them to simulate a small greenhouse.
13.1 Wow! You must be an amazing athlete! We have had a lot of rain and tilling up our garden in preparation for planting has been delayed for several days. We were finally able to get it planted last night, but it's frustrating when things don't go your way due to uncooperative weather.
